Hypnotherapy for anxiety??
I often get asked whether hypnotherapy is effective for anxiety relief and my answer is a resounding ‘yes’! With an estimated 1 in 5 Australians living with anxiety or other mental health condition, it’s a very common condition.
What happens in a hypnotherapy session?
The first session starts with me exploring how you ‘do’ your anxiety. Everyone experiences anxiety in subtly different ways. For some, there are physical symptoms such as an increased heart rate or a feeling in the pit of their stomach. Other clients describe a sense of overwhelm or a constant stream of negative self-talk. Many clients will use some kind of analogy or metaphor such as ‘I feel like I’m locked in a cage’ or ‘It’s like an elephant on my chest’.
I don’t pretend to know what a client wants instead of these thoughts and feeling so the most important question I ask is ‘What do you want instead?’ *insert tumbleweed*
For some clients, in particular those living with anxiety for some time, this is a really difficult question to answer.
I use a range of techniques to help you answer this question and to get you where you want to be, as quickly as possible (no clucking chickens required).
But how does it work?
I like to describe hypnotherapy as a bit like electricity. You don’t really know how electricity works, you just flick the light switch and light appears. You don’t necessarily need to know every detail, you just know that it just happens.
But seriously, how does it work?!
The easiest way is to think of your mind as having lots of different departments who look after different functions, rather like a big department store. Your brain stores all the information you see, read, feel and experience on a constant basis. Just like the department store can’t display all of its merchandise in the shop window, you can’t retain and recall all of your information at the front of your mind, but its in there somewhere. It’s rather like when you hear a song for the first time in years, you can remember every detail of the song and what you were doing during that memory.
Hypnotherapy works by being able to access different part of your brain, some call it the unconscious brain, to help you resolve whatever issue you are facing.
How many sessions will I need?
Whilst hypnotherapy often sees faster results than traditional talking based therapies, it’s not a magic pill. Clients will typically see some positive change within 3-5 sessions.
